The Brief
Northern Frights commissioned us to design and build a portable puzzle prop that could be used repeatedly at events and travelling game experiences. The concept centred around a “magic” puzzle chest – a physical object that could act as both a visual focal point and an interactive gameplay element.
Because the chest would be used across multiple locations, durability and reliability were key. It needed to withstand frequent transport, regular player interaction and repeated resets between groups. At the same time, it had to feel intriguing and theatrical enough to immediately attract attention in a busy event environment.
The brief therefore focused on creating a robust puzzle object that balanced visual character with practical usability, while remaining easy for staff to operate and reset throughout the day.
Our Solution
We designed and fabricated a custom puzzle chest that combined scenic build techniques with integrated puzzle mechanics. The exterior was constructed to feel like a distinctive prop rather than a simple container, giving the object a strong visual presence within the game environment.
Internally, the chest was engineered to support a repeatable puzzle interaction. Components were built to withstand frequent use while maintaining consistent functionality. Particular attention was given to how the mechanism reset, ensuring staff could quickly prepare it for the next group without complex procedures.
The structure itself was reinforced to cope with transportation between venues. Materials and internal fixings were selected with movement in mind, helping the prop remain stable and reliable even after repeated travel.
By treating the chest as both a scenic object and a mechanical puzzle device, the final build delivered a balance between visual storytelling and practical gameplay.
The finished puzzle chest provides Northern Frights with a portable interactive prop that can be used across a range of events and experiences. Its construction allows it to travel between locations while maintaining reliability during repeated use.
Because the mechanism was designed with reset speed in mind, staff are able to run multiple groups without long turnaround times. The chest also functions as a clear visual centrepiece, helping draw players toward the activity even in busy event settings.
